Harvesting and eating our delicious vegetables

On Monday Rebecca came in to help us cook our delicious artichokes, broccoli and broad beans!
We prepared the artichokes by picking off the outer leaves, then scraping our the middle bit to leave the delicious heart bit. We soaked them in lemon so they wouldn't go brown. Then we boiled them up and had a vege feast! We made a caper, lemon and parsley butter dip for the veges, making them super delicious! We were really thankful that Rebecca was such an enthusiast. There's nothing she didn't know!

Beach clean up - Nov 2013

Most of the Emerald Army plus a few others descended onto Hataitai Beach with sacks and gloves ready to beat the plastic after our school talks by Ryley from Sustainable Coastlines. We learnt the importance of reducing our plastic and waste as it spirals into oceans and seriously affects animal life. We were horrified at the amount of litter that had wound up trapped amongst the rocks. Thanks to all the parents that joined us, we're hoping to make it a more regular thing next year! We found a nest full of baby birds, does anybody know what bird it is?

Sustainable coastlines are an organisation who strive to keep our coasts rubbish free. They organise coastal clean ups in Wellington regularly and these can be found at http://sustainablecoastlines.org.

Working Bee Term 4 2013

On Sunday 17th parents and children descended on Hataitai School armed with chainsaws, wheelbarrows, spades, and hotdogs..... They sawed, chipped, tidied, and weeded. Bee Cafés where created and the butterfly garden was planted out with more swan plants for our summer Monarch Butterflies. A MASSIVE thank you to all who came and helped. Check out some of hither photos and see if you recognise anyone!

Lilli and Maddy From year 3/4 collected all this litter from our school grounds! It's too much! Let's stop dropping it!
